Colombian President Warns 'I Shall Take Up Arms Once More' if United States Launches an Attack.

The US President and Colombia's president have escalated the rhetoric in their verbal conflict, further raising tensions bilaterally after US forces struck Venezuela with the aim of deposing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He has drug factories and production sites and is not going to be doing it very long," the US president stated.

Escalating Rhetoric coupled with Accusations

Speaking to the press on Sunday, Trump hinted at comparable use of force against Bogotá, claiming Colombia is also "very ill" and governed by an unwell individual who likes making narcotics and trafficking it to the US."

While Colombia remains the world’s largest producer of cocaine, authorities have found no indication linking President Gustavo Petro, elected two years ago, is personally tied to the illicit industry.

A Strained Alliance

Colombia has long been a staunch collaborator of the United States in the struggle against drug trafficking and benefited from cross-party backing in Washington, but relations have deteriorated dramatically after Trump came to office.

The nation's illicit drug economy is predominantly run by guerrilla factions like one major cartel, another leftist insurgency and breakaway groups of the demobilized Farc, a large contingent of whom disbanded following a landmark accord.

Colombia's Strong Rebuttal

When asked if armed intervention comparable to Venezuela was a possibility against his country, Trump responded: "I like the sound of that to me personally."

President Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who disarmed in the last century, firmly denied the accusations. "I am no illegitimate nor am I a drug trafficker," he affirmed.

"Trump speaks without knowledge. Cease defaming me," he wrote in a post.

"If they [the US] bomb peasants, they will transform into a multitude of fighters across the countryside. And if they detain the nation's leader, whom a large part of Colombians holds in high esteem, they will release the fierce spirit of the populace," Petro warned.

From Fighter to Statesman

The president dedicated a period in his early life participating in the left-wing M-19 armed organization though it is believed he did not took part in armed clashes. After demobilizing, he was involved in writing a new constitution in 1991 subsequently becoming an influential politician. He held the office of mayor of the capital city prior to his election the nation's highest office.

"I swore to never again hold a gun ... but for the homeland I will take up weapons once more," he said.

Reinforced Protection and Widespread Condemnation

Minister Pedro Sánchez reported that the national leader's security detail had been reinforced.

Several members of Colombia’s right wing opposition have allied themselves with Trump, but voices from across the ideological divide have denounced the threats of an invasion against their nation.

Political and Economic Sanctions

The US withdrew Petro’s visa subsequent to he urged American soldiers to ignore unlawful commands. Months later, it placed asset freezes targeting Petro, his wife and several key allies.

At the same time while America bolstered its military presence near Venezuela and bombing alleged narcotics traffickers against Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets have also conducted operations on boats in Pacific waters near Colombia.
